If you've been marketing on the internet for very long, you've probably heard the phrase “lead magnet“. Maybe you already have a lead magnet that's working well. Maybe you've been struggling to come up with one. Or maybe you're confused by the whole concept.
This post will not only clear things up, but I'll show you how YOU can become you own lead magnet.
Lead Magnet: The Definition
First, let's define what's classically thought of as a lead magnet for internet marketers.
A Lead Magnet is a free giveaway that ideally solves a problem of your target audience, and that people will gladly provide their information to obtain.
It can come in many forms, including a free video training, audio. PDF, webinar periscope, etc, and is linked to email marketing software, allowing the marketer to “build his/her list”.
The idea is simple.
You (the marketer) give away useful information to an audience eager to consume it, and in exchange, you build a list of highly targeted individuals to correspond with.
For example, my target market is marketers who are building their business with limited time and who usually (but not always) have a traditional job and grow their business “on the side”.
One of my lead magnets is a free video training called The Part-Time Profit Blueprint.
I think you can see how Part Time Marketers would love that information, and they gladly provide their email for free access.
What Does “Become Your Own Lead Magnet” Mean?
If you don't have your lead magnet figured out, you can still generate leads by becoming your own lead magnet.
And if you have a lead magnet that's working well (meaning you're generating leads and growing your list) but you're not building a loyal audience of buyers from your list, the following tips will help with that, too.
What does “becoming your own lead magnet” mean?
It simply means being so magnetic and attractive to your audience that they COME TO YOU, looking for help.
Sounds great… but how do you make that happen?
Fair question, so let's get into it.
7 Rules For Becoming Your Own Lead Magnet
Yes! It is possible to become your own lead magnet, even if you're just beginning your home business journey.
If you follow these rules, you'll soon have people noticing you, following your progress, and asking for help and more information about what you do.
Rule 1: Be Consistent
It's a little sad to say, but you can stand out from most of your competitors by simply being consistent!
You may not realize it, but if you're out there creating content or posting on social media on a regular basis, people are watching.
They're watching to see if you last.
The truth is that most people lack consistency and don't last, off to chase the next shiny object that promises riches.
But you can be different.
When you stay in the game and remain consistent in your efforts, others will take notice and want to check out what you're doing!
Rule 2: Be Specific In Your Message
Not only should be consistent in your marketing efforts, but you must be specific in your message.
You can't be all things to all people… and you shouldn't try!
Once you determine your target market, speak DIRECTLY to them.
Address their biggest problems.
Provide them solutions when possible.
Oh, and one more thing…
If you jump around from MLM to MLM, opportunity to opportunity and find yourself repeating “this one is the real deal!” over and over, then you're probably confusing your audience with your message.
It's kind of like the boy who cried wolf…
After a while, they stop listening!
Rule 3: Ask Questions… And Then Listen
You were born with 2 ears and one mouth…
Spend twice as much time LISTENING as you do speaking.
If marketers would just follow this one simple rule, they'd make a lot more money!
If you really want to connect with your audience, ask questions.
Ask LOTS of questions…
And then listen.
Let them tell you what's preventing them from realizing their dreams.
People tend to enjoy talking about themselves…
When you give them a chance to explain, they'll trust you more and guess what?
You've just become more magnetic!
Rule 4: Don't Be All About Business
If you want to become your own lead magnet, you may want to reveal some personal stories about yourself.
To the level you're comfortable with, talk about your family, your travels, and even things that happen to you during your day.
When you involve your online audience with your offline life, they feel included and this adds to your attractor factor.
Rule 5: Be Okay With Sowing Without Reaping
You've heard the saying, “you reap what you sow“.
Sometimes, you've got to be okay with sowing without reaping (at least in the immediate future).
Sometimes your prospect is better served by connecting him/her with a person who can help them where you cannot.
When you become known as a connector and not just a prospector, you earn the trust of both your audience and your fellow marketers.
This happened to me just recently…
A Facebook friend connected me with a fellow who was looking for help building his business part time.
My friend knew of my speciality and referred him to me. He has since joined my team and is moving forward in his business.
He's happy because he has a solution to his problem.
I'm happy because I have a new team member and potential coaching client.
And my friend, the connector built a ton of credibility with both of us.
Believe me, this will work in her favor when I come across someone who needs her products. 🙂
.
Rule 6: Teach What You Learn (and Always Be Learning)
If you want to become attractive and magnetic towards others, you must always be learning.
The sayings “leaders are readers” and “learners are earners” couldn't be more true.
But it goes further…
Yes, you must always be learning new things to keep your business moving forward, but also need to be teaching what you learn to others.
To become your own magnet, you must be seen as an authority, and nothing does that faster than teaching.
For those who get a little intimidated by teaching others (“who's gonna listen to me?”), you don't need a big track record to help others.
You just need a servant's heart.
And that leads us to our last rule…
Rule 7: Give Much More Than You Take
Just as you must listen more than you talk (Rule 3), you should also give far more than you take.
One question I get asked often is, “when should I pitch my business?“.
And my answer almost always is “when they ask about it“.
We all know that people do business with those they trust.
And trust is not easily built, but very easily destroyed.
In his book, Jab Jab Jab, Right Hook, Gary Vaynerchuk relates this concept to a boxing match.
Jab, Jab, Jab equates to Give, Give, Give…
Right hook means to ask for the sale.
Learn to give much more than you take in this business and you're credibility and trust factor will go through the roof (and so will your sales).
BONUS RULE: Share Your Setbacks (AFTER You've Overcome Them!)
One of the biggest mistakes I see marketers make on social media is posting about their obstacles and setbacks.
While it's true you may get many “likes” and “comments”, you won't necessarily be drawing the best crowd.
Yes, everyone has struggles, but you become much more magnetic when you first overcome those obstacles and then tell the story of how you did it.
Figure out how to get past your struggles first and then teach others how you did it.
It's very, very powerful and will make you a very strong lead magnet!
These are the 7 (+1) Rules of Becoming Your Own Lead Magnet. They have nothing to do with experience or knowledge or results.
It's all about you!

Sowing and reaping is the only way to go. You can build a solid business in any industry simply by providing value. When you give people free information many of those folks will beat down your door to hire you as a coach or consultant, and/or buy the products you have for sale. This is attraction marketing at its finest.
It works! 🙂
