Just because you started a business doesn’t automatically make you an entrepreneur.

That might be tough to hear, especially if you’ve poured your heart into launching your dream and you’re riding that initial wave of excitement.

I totally get that excitement.

When I started my business back in 2008, I had already put in 35 years working in healthcare.

My family? All employees.

My parents, my siblings—no entrepreneurs in sight.

So when I launched my business, I proudly claimed the title.

“I’m an entrepreneur!” I’d tell everyone.

But here’s the truth: I was still operating with an employee mindset.

And that disconnect kept me stuck for far too long.

From Clock-In Mentality to Value Creation

Let’s talk about paychecks.

As an employee, you trade time for money.

You show up, do your hours, and expect a check like clockwork.

Entrepreneurs?

We get paid for results—for the value we bring into the marketplace.

You can put in 30 hours this week and earn nothing.

Or spend 10 hours delivering real value and earn more than you did all month at your job.

One man I coached put in two weeks of solid work on his business and said, “It’s Friday. Where’s my money?

That mindset right there—that’s the employee mindset.

It doesn’t translate.

The entrepreneurial world runs on value and outcomes, not hours.

The Shift from Employee to Entrepreneur Mindset is a Whole Identity Change

It’s not just about getting paid differently.

It’s how you view mistakes.

As an employee, a big mistake could cost you your job.

You’re taught to avoid risk, play it safe, keep your head down.

In business?

Mistakes are data.

If you’re not making any, you’re not growing.

I had to train myself to stop fearing failure.

To welcome it.

Because failure meant I was moving, testing, learning.

Then there’s the boss factor.

In your job, someone else makes all the decisions.

When to start, when to stop, what to focus on, what the priorities are.

As an entrepreneur, you’re the boss.

You set the goals.

You choose what to work on.

And that’s hard.

Especially if you’re building your business after hours, when your energy is low and the couch is calling.

I did that for 10 years before leaving my full-time healthcare career.

It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it.

You need to become the toughest boss you’ve ever had.

The kind who sets hours and sticks to them.

The kind who doesn’t allow excuses—even when you’re tired, distracted, or discouraged.

A question I always ask is key —

If you showed up in your business the way you show up at your job… would you fire yourself?

Mindset Before Strategy: Why You're Still Stuck

If you’ve been spinning your wheels, putting in time, following the strategies, and still not seeing results—here’s the truth:

Your strategy isn’t broken.
Your mindset is.

More specifically, you haven’t fully made the shift from employee to entrepreneur mindset.

And until you do, your results will reflect that internal hesitation.

I struggled with this too.

I kept wondering how I could be so successful in healthcare, yet feel like a failure in my business.

It wasn’t until one of my coaches pointed out that I was still thinking like an employee that the light bulb went off.

That shift changed everything.

So How Do You Actually Make the Shift?

First, awareness.

You can’t change what you don’t see.

You have to become aware of the old scripts and beliefs that are holding you back.

Things like…

  • “I worked hard, where’s my reward?”

  • “If I mess up, I’ve failed.”

  • “I don’t know what to do next—someone tell me.”

Then, I adopted my “Just For Today” mindset.

Just for today, I’ll be okay with making mistakes.
Just for today, I’ll release the pressure of needing results.
Just for today, I’ll show up with discipline and be my own best boss.

Entrepreneurship is like a muscle.

You strengthen it one rep at a time.

The more you show up with intention, the more powerful your mindset becomes.

Final Thoughts: This Shift is Non-Negotiable

If you want to thrive, not just survive, in business—you must make the shift from employee to entrepreneur mindset.

It’s not a tactic.

It’s a transformation.

And yes, it’s going to take time.

You’re rewiring decades of conditioning.

But with grace, grit, and daily intention, you’ll get there.

I know because I’ve done it.
