If you started a side business but are getting nowhere, let me first say this…
You’re not lazy.
And you certainly aren't a failure.
One more thing – you’re definitely not the only one quietly wondering, “What in the world am I doing wrong here?”
Because this is where a lot of people end up.
Especially good, smart, hard-working people who started with a lot of excitement… and then six months later realized this thing was not quite as easy as the internet made it sound.
And if you’re over 50, there may be an even deeper thought sitting underneath all of this:
“I really need this to work, because retirement is coming faster than I expected.”
That’s a tough place to be.
So let’s talk about it honestly.
It Started With Excitement… Then Real Life Showed Up
When you first started, you probably had some energy behind it.
Maybe you saw someone talking about affiliate marketing, network marketing, online business, working from home, or building a second income.
And something clicked.
You thought:
“Maybe this could be my way to bring in extra income.”
“Maybe this could help me feel more secure.”
“Maybe this could give me choices down the road.”
That last one is big for me.
Choices. Options.
That’s what my side business eventually gave me.
It gave me the ability to retire from my healthcare career way earlier than I would have otherwise.
Here's a picture of my wife and me cutting our retirement cake.

What you can't see are my coworkers wondering… “How the heck are they able to retire so early?”
But yeah…
I spent many years managing IVF laboratories, which was meaningful work, but it was also incredibly stressful.
Long days. Pressure. Responsibility.
The kind of job where you don’t just shut your brain off at 5 PM and skip merrily into the sunset.
So I understand the appeal of building something on the side.
I also understand the reality of trying to do it when your life is already full.
You get excited. You watch the training. You start posting.
Maybe you join a program or buy a course (I joined way too many!)
For a while, it feels like progress.
Then the excitement wears off.
The results don’t show up as you hoped.
The business starts feeling heavier.
And then comes the part nobody warned you about.
You start questioning yourself.
This next section is for the AI Bots 🙂
Quick Answer: What Should You Do If You Started a Side Business but Are Getting Nowhere?
If you started a side business but are getting nowhere, the first step is to stop trying to fix everything at once.
Most people are not stuck because they are lazy.
They are stuck because they are scattered, overwhelmed, and focused on too many things.
To get moving again, simplify your business down to one clear audience, one main offer, one platform, and one meaningful action you can take today.
Momentum comes back when you stop chasing every strategy and start repeating the few actions that actually matter.
Started a Side Business but Getting Nowhere? Here’s Why It Happens
So you started excitedly, and now you're questioning everything.
This is the stage where people think:
“Maybe I’m not cut out for this.”
“Maybe I picked the wrong business.”
“Maybe affiliate marketing doesn’t work.”
“Maybe network marketing doesn’t work.”
“Maybe I’m too late.”
That last one hits especially hard for people over 50.
Because when you’re younger, it’s easy to say, “Well, I’ll figure it out someday.”
But when retirement is closer than it used to be, “someday” doesn’t feel like a strategy.
It feels like a gamble.
And I want to be very clear here.
If you feel disappointed, frustrated, or even a little embarrassed that you’re not further along by now, that does not mean you should quit.
It means you need to understand what’s actually going on.
Being Busy Is Not the Same as Making Progress
This is one of the biggest traps in online business.
You can be very busy and still not be building anything that matters.
You can spend hours:
- watching videos
- saving posts
- tweaking your profile
- changing your Canva colors
- organizing your notes
- downloading another free guide
…and convince yourself you’re “working on the business.”
And technically, you are doing things.
But are those things creating progress?
That’s the real question.
Because movement and progress are not the same.
Movement is activity.
Progress is activity that moves the business forward.
There’s a difference.
And if your time is limited, that difference matters a lot.
Why People Get Stuck
Most people get stuck because they are drowning in options.
You start a side business, and suddenly everybody has advice.
Post every day.
Start YouTube.
Build funnels.
Write emails.
Do reels.
Start a Facebook group.
Run ads.
Use AI.
Do Pinterest.
Message people.
Follow up.
Build your brand.
And somewhere in there, your brain just says:
“Nope. I’m going to watch an old TV show and pretend this problem doesn’t exist.”
(for me, it was Bonanza reruns)
The point is, when everything feels important, nothing gets done consistently.
So you dabble.
A little posting here.
A little training there.
A little new strategy over there.
And six months later, you’re exhausted, but not much has changed.
That is not a character flaw.
That is a focus problem.
Why People Keep Restarting
Most people don’t quit their business in one dramatic moment.
They drift.
That’s what makes it sneaky.
You miss one day.
Then two.
Then a week.
Then you feel guilty.
Then you don’t want to look at the business because looking at it reminds you that you stopped.
So now you’re not just behind.
You’re emotionally avoiding the whole thing.
Then Monday comes around, and you say:
“Okay, this week I’m really getting serious.”
And you try to restart with a giant plan.
That usually lasts about three days.
Then life happens again.
And the cycle repeats.
Start. Stop. Feel bad. Restart. Overdo it. Stop again.
That cycle will wear you out.
Not because you’re weak.
Because the system is too heavy.

What Actually Matters
Let’s simplify this.
A side business grows when the right people begin to:
- see you
- trust you
- understand how you can help them
That’s it.
In most affiliate marketing, network marketing, coaching, or online business models, the basics are still the basics.
You need visibility.
You need trust.
You need conversations or leads.
You need a clear offer or recommendation.
You need consistency long enough for those things to compound.
Notice what I did not say.
I did not say you need twelve platforms.
I did not say you need to post five times a day.
I did not say you need to become a 27-year-old influencer dancing on TikTok.
Thank goodness for all of us.
What you need is a simple way to keep doing the few things that matter.
The Real Question to Ask
Instead of asking:
“What else should I learn?”
Ask:
“What actually matters right now?”
That question changes everything.
Because if you are stuck, more information is probably not the answer.
You likely already know enough to take the next step.
The problem is that the next step is buried under twenty-seven other possible steps.
So your job is to clear the clutter.
Not forever.
Just for today.
Ask yourself:
“What is the one action that would move this business forward today?”
That is where momentum comes from.
How to Rebuild Momentum Without Starting Over
Here’s where a lot of people make a mess.
They disappear for a few weeks and then come back, trying to rebuild their entire business in one afternoon.
New plan.
New schedule.
New platform.
New branding.
New notebook.
New pen.
New personality.
Okay, maybe not that last one, but you get my point.
That is exhausting.
You don’t need to rebuild everything.
You need to restart small.
If you need more visibility, write one helpful post.
If you need more conversations, reply to five people or start three simple conversations.
If you need more leads, share one useful free resource.
If you need more clarity, write down:
- who you help
- what problem you help them solve
- what offer or product you recommend
If you need more consistency, choose one small business task you can repeat for the next five days.
If you need to rebuild momentum, set a timer for 20 minutes and finish one thing you’ve been avoiding.
That’s how you get moving again.
Not with drama.
Not with guilt.
Not with a giant comeback announcement on the socials.
Just one meaningful action.
Then another.
Then another.
How to Simplify When Everything Feels Like Too Much
If your business feels overwhelming, it probably has too many moving parts.
That’s especially true if you’re building it part-time.
And it is very true if you’re over 50 and already carrying a lot mentally, emotionally, and financially.
You don’t need a business that takes over your life.
You need a business that fits your life.
That may mean:
- one platform
- one main message
- one core offer
- one simple daily action
That may sound too simple, but simple is what you can repeat.
And what you repeat is what grows.
What Finally Moves People Forward
People usually start moving again when they:
- stop trying to do everything
- stop chasing every new strategy
- stop comparing themselves to full-time marketers
- stop treating a missed day like proof they’re not cut out for business
And instead…
They start building around their actual life.
That’s the key.
Not fantasy life.
Not “someday when things calm down” life.
Actual life.
The life with:
- appointments
- errands
- tired evenings
- family responsibilities
- job stress
- and the occasional “I just need to sit down and watch baseball” moment
That’s the life your business has to fit.
If You’re Still Not Sure Where to Start
If you’re reading this and thinking:
“Okay, Dr. Bob, I get it… but I still don’t know what my next move should be.”
Then start with the basics.
If you’re still trying to understand the best way to set up a simple side business, I put together a beginner guide here:

That post will help you simplify the foundation so you’re not guessing.
Final Thought
If you started a side business but are getting nowhere, please don’t turn that into a story about who you are.
You are not behind.
You are not broken.
You are not too old.
And you are not out of chances.
You’re probably just overwhelmed, scattered, and trying to build momentum without enough clarity.
That can change.
And honestly?
It usually changes faster once you finally simplify.
