imagesOvercoming procrastination (in all its forms) is crucial for anyone building a home business, particularly if you're doing it Part Time.

I would venture to say that procrastination is the #1 Killer of home-based businesses, because it's so prevalent and, let's face it…

JUSTIFIABLE!

I'm reading this book called The War of Art, by Steven Pressfield.  I highly recommend it.  In fact, I believe it should be required reading for every would-be entrepreneur.

The main premise of this book is that something called RESISTANCE is at the heart of people not living the life they were meant to live.  Resistance is what causes us to pull back, to settle for less, to stop short of our dreams, and yes…

To procrastinate.

Overcoming Procrastination:  Why It Matters

It's easy to justify not doing something.  We can easily rationalize not blogging or making videos before we __________ (enter any excuse here).  Where it becomes truly dangerous is when procrastination becomes a HABIT.

Procrastination is easy because, in our minds we're only putting off something TEMPORARILY.  It would be too harsh and less palatable if we were to say, “I will never start a blog” or “I will never pick up the phone to call a lead”.

Rather, we say things like “I'll start a blog next week” or “I'll pick up the phone after I go through this course on Phone Prospecting.”

In the end, “some day” becomes NEVER if we don't break the habit.

If overcoming procrastination is at the top of your To Do list, we need to take a closer look at RESISTANCE.

Resistance and Overcoming Procrastination

According to Steven Pressfied in The War of Art, resistance has the following characteristics:

1.  Resistance is Internal – it comes from within.

2.  Resistance is Insidious – it's always there ready to stop you from taking action.

3.  Resistance is Implacable – it cannot be reasoned with.

4.  Resistance is Impersonal – it's a force of nature and affects everyone.

5.  Resistance is Infallible – it's strongest when our action will have the greatest results.

6.  Resistance is Universal – everyone who has a body experiences resistance.

7.  Resistance is Fueled By Fear – it feeds on our fears

Overcoming Procrastination:  Mastering Our Fears

It's pretty simple.

  • We procrastinate because we fear something.
  • We fear looking bad in front of others.
  • We fear failure.
  • We fear rejection.
  • We fear success.

And with that fear comes resistance.

The more fear, the more resistance!

The more resistance, the harder it is to get off our butts and get into action.

The “cure” for procrastination?

You probably already guessed it.

A-C-T-I-O-N

The 6-letter word that kicks procrastination and resistance to the curb and reduces our fears to “why was I EVER scared of doing that?

The greatest part of all?

Overcoming procrastination is something we all can do, any day, any hour at any moment.

Procrastination has no power over us when we face our fears and DO IT ANYWAY!

To your success!
