Having the courage to lead is an important characteristic in any type of leadership position. Regardless of what kind of industry you are in, courage typically separates those who lead and those who don’t. Are you seriously interested in becoming an effective business leader in your field? If you are, read on to learn effective strategies that will help you become a successful leader.
Know Your Team
Invest in your team members. You’ll need to invest both time and energy. Evaluate their skills, coach their weaknesses and boost their self-esteem. When you are doing an evaluation, you want to make sure your team member is in the position that best utilizes their skill set. When you are coaching a team member, make sure you are able to communicate effective criticism. Building confidence in each individual that is part of your team is necessary for the overall health of your business.
Communicate
Make sure you clearly communicate your business vision. Make sure you team understands it. Incorporate tangible motivation, such as financial benefits for those that meet intended goals. Incorporate bonuses, pay raises, and other financial incentives to transform an ordinary employee into one that can provide extraordinary results.
Stay Positive
Staying positive, enthusiastic and motivated are all part of your job description as a leader. The way you act, your temperament and your passion will all translate into how your team works and interacts with one another. Their work will either reflect your passion or your disengagement. As the leader you have to be able to push through tough decisions, even if its not always easy. It’s simply part of the job.
Share The Glory
A great leader isn’t afraid to give praise when its due. A great leader isn’t someone to take an idea and pass it off as their own. Honesty is a trait that you will need in order to gain the trust of your team. After all, how can you plan on leading if no one wants to follow?
Be Fair, Not Popular
You don’t necessarily have to be the most popular person, it’s not part of your job description. You are leading because you are the one who has what it takes to squeeze extraordinary results from your team. This means that you may have to make tough calls, its simple part of the process.
Ask Questions
Asking questions may be more important than you think. They can also help find solutions to problems that may have been overlooked. It’ll also help take a situation and consider all possible scenarios, yes, simply by asking a lot of questions. The aim of these questions needs to be the catalyst it takes to create an action oriented plan. Are you asking enough of the right questions?
Be Human
Be prepared to allow your team members to make mistakes. Let them learn from their mistakes, it is part of the process of being a leader. Remember that most great leaders got to their positions by not always following the rules, learning from their mistakes and pushing through hardships. This is what becoming an effective business leader is all about, regardless of your industry.

I would say that sharing the glory is a huge part of being a great leader. Your team needs to know that their efforts contributed to your success as a group, and if they get that positive feedback, they will be more willing to work hard in the future.
I agree, Jan. I have had bosses who took all the glory for themselves — nothing can be so demoralizing to a team!
If business leaders want to be effective in their respective teams, then, they should consider the tips provided above. Doing this will not only make them do that but will make them attain success as well.
